God is a rewarder.

There is a blessing beyond any other when you are privileged to be called for God’s service. It comes with both earthen and heavenly rewards. The Psalmist said that it is better to be one day in the heavenly courts then one thousand years of life (Ps84:10). Just to be a porter in the house of God brings about the greatest satisfaction. The simplest thing that we can do to serve in God’s kingdom (Eph6:7-8), is not without rewards. God is a rewarder of those who serve and seek him (He11:6). He does not forget your labor of love that comes with fear and respect you have for him.

2 Samuel 6:20-23

20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

21 And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord.

22 And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.

23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

King David went through a humbling experience when after the ark of the covenant went missing and after he finds it decides to restore it to its rightful place. The Ark, which symbolized the presence of God, was in Abinadab’s home for about 20 years as an artifact. It was covered with gold, it had two Cherubim’s facing each other and a seat in the middle where God would sit when speaking with Moses. David sets out to return it to the city of David and puts it on a buggy pulled by two oxen. With the two sons of Abinadab steering and guiding it, the buggy runs into a bumpy road and is about to slide off. Uzzah, one of Abinadab’s sons stretched out his hand to sustain it from falling, and God strikes him dead. The Ark of the covenant was supposed to be carried by Levite priest and not by animals.

David out of fear and anger decides to send the Ark to Obed-Edom’s home instead to its proper place. God’s blessing was so heavily in Obed’s home that it reached David’s ears. As the scriptures say, “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and it adds no sorrow” (Prv10:22). Obed was not afraid of the presence of God in his home even after what happened to Uzzah. David decides to go back and get the Ark the right way with the Levite priests carrying it, and after 6 inches he offers a sacrifice before the Lord. As the Ark is carried to its final destination David is dancing with all his might behind the Ark, and not carrying what the people might say. When the Ark reaches its final destination David decides to put Obed as one of the porters to the Tabernacle. The privilege of being placed as a guardian to the court where the presence of God was, was Obed’s. Paul tells Timothy to guard the deposit that was within him (2Tim1:14).

Mical, David’s wife was embarrassed and ashamed for the way he danced after the Ark. But David was dancing for the Lord and was willing to do it all over again despite of whatever anyone would say. Because he remembered that the blessing of the Lord is more precious than gold and that it enriches, David was willing to humble himself to the max.
