Me and my house

One of the things that is crucial in these days to have is the blessing of  God at homes. Without God’s blessing of our homes they will become prey to the enemy and he will destroy it. The bible teaches that unless the Lord builds the house it is in vain for men to build it (ps127:1). But, how do we usher in the presence of the Lord into our homes? Remember that if we do not put in a firm foundation at our homes it will tumble and fall just like in the parable about a man who builds his home sand (Mt24:27). There are six precepts to a healthy family; commitment, fellowship, communication, appreciation, spiritual commitment, problem solving.  These are the things that bring the presence of the Lord to our homes.

1 Chronicles 13:12-14

12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household and everything he had.

In our passage we learn that David has just been made king and his attitude was to please God, because he understood that he is the one who puts kings and takes them out. And, he decides to bring the Ark of the Covenant from this obscure place into public. It was placed on a cart with oxen instead on the shoulders of the priest where it should have. As in every home  God should immediately reflected when people visit, they should be able to say God is in this house. God should be celebrated in our homes as he is in church. Now, the Ark was a representation of God’s presence and in it was a pledge from God to his people that he would never leave them (Deut31:8). Jesus made mention of this covenant to his disciples after the resurrection when he said “I will never leave you” (Mt28:20). The people of Israel along with David were so excited that as they parade the Ark to its destination, they came behind it dancing and celebrating with all their might.

But, when the Ark reached a bumpy spot the while everyone was having a dance party it began to tumble and fall. Uzzah, who was one of the priests stretched his hand to sustain it, but God slew him; his anger stirred up against him. When David saw this he feared and decided to find a different place for the Ark and not his city or house. Job understood this idea that with God not everything is going to be pleasing to us, and that he will change things and clean our homes (Job2:10). David sent the Ark to Obed-Edom’s house which for three months it prospered abundantly. The prosperity was so that it reached the king’s house and to the king’s ears. Obed’s fearing God behavior caused the blessing of the home. He named all eight of his children with names that honored God.  Joshua said something like this “as for me and my house we shall serve the Lord” (Josh24:15).
