The ten commandments are the source from which every law or commandment derived from. Each one of the those commandments are specific and have their own directs man to keeping man in relationship with God.

The Commandments:

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make idols.
  3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet.(Ex. 20:2-17)

But, one commandment is the first one that constitute a specific promise and it is number 5 “Honor your father and your mother”. Now, before elaborating on the fifth commandment and its promises, the question that comes to mind is, why the fifth and why not the third which deals directly with the relationship with God? God places the family almost parallel to the relationship with him. When Jesus mentioned the two of the greatest commandments in Matthew 22 where he mentioned loving your neighbor (Mt.22:36-40). When loving God is not part of ones life as the first commandment Jesus mentioned then the probability of family being dismantled is great, the prophet Micah mentions this when he says that the enemy of man s his own home (Mi.7:6). Eli in 1 Samuel suffered the lost of God’s promises for his children because he did not chastise them when he needed too (1Sa3:13-14). His children refused to honor their dad and decided to continue corrupting the ladies.

Ephesians 6:1-2

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

The promises for honoring; that is esteeming, following, maintaining good report because off, our parents are There are promises to the children of that father or mother who pursues God and they deal with obtaining good long life (Prv. 3:1-3). Promises of guidance, protection and companionship all come through a parent (mother) that is in the pursue of God (Prv. 6:20-23). Wisdom, also follows those that seek the Lord and that wisdom is passed down to our children (Prv.13:1). Salvation is another promise that is for our children Paul mentioned this promise to the jailer who was guarding him and his friend while they were in jail (Acts 16:31). The promises for our children are ever present for the parent who seeks God, but the parent has to seek God.
