The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, Matthew, stops with Abraham as the leading descendant. Matthew does not stop with Adam, the first man, so the question is, why with Abraham and not with Adam? The book of the generation of the world starts with the earth and everything else on a given day, with day number six for man, Adam, the man of sin. The New Testament begins with the book of the generation of the creator of the world, the man of faith. Jesus’ descendants are from the father of faith, Abraham (Ro 4:16). God told him that all the families of the earth would be blessed through him (Ge 12:3). After Abraham, Matthew mentions King David in Christ’s lineage. And because David believed God, as Abraham did, he promised him someone to rule in his stead throughout eternity (2 Sm 7:12-13). Now, Mary and Joseph were both from David’s lineage, who was from Abraham’s lineage, the father of faith. The custom of the Jews was to use the lineage of the male as the genealogy, but Jesus was not Joseph’s biological son, so they used both, Mary’s and Joseph’s. Both Mary and Joseph were descendants of David.
Matthew 1:1
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The scriptures tell us that the first Adam was from the earth; he came out of dust. He symbolizes humanity and nature with the capacity for sin. Adam introduced disobedience, animosity, hatred, and murder as sins that separate us from God (Ro 5:12). That book of the generation of the natural man ends where the book of the generation of Jesus Christ begins. Jesus was not of Adam’s generation. He was of the heavenly Father’s generation and that of faith; a seed of the Holy Spirit, the second Adam (1 Cor 15:45). The scriptures tell us that once we have come to Christ, we are no longer of the carnal mind, but of the Spirit (Ro 8:9-10). We are to put on the new man, which is created in righteousness and true holiness (Eph 4:22-24).
