With no expectation:

The idea of giving not expecting anything in return is a trademark of God. It was a law in the Old Testament that God’s people were to give or lend to their brothers who could not repay them. To some, it was to keep them from going to jail. Giving was and is a means for receiving. Jesus said it in the Sermon of the Mount, that if you give you will recieve (Lk 6:38). In Deuteronomy, God told his people that when they gave without expecting anything in return, they would be blessed (Deut 15:10, Pro 11:25). It is one of the things that makes God who he is, that he thinks about those who cannot fend for themselves (Deut 10:18). When we cannot defend ourselves, God comes to our rescue and many times without anyone asking him. David knew that the only place his help would come from was the Lord (Ps 121:1-2). It is called God’s kindness.

Luke 6:35

35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

God, out of his kindness, defends the weak, feeds the poor, cares for the orphan and the widow, and provides for his creation. Jesus said that God feeds the birds of the air and dresses the lilies of the field. It is his kindness that his providence goes out into his creation. God is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. We are known to be children of God when we are kind, just as he is. Kind means to be mild and pleasant. Even when people are mean and nasty, dishonoring God, he is mild and pleasant with them. John says that God did not send his son to condemn the world but to save it (Jh 3:17), that is kindness. The expectation for the children of God is to be kind. Jesus said that if your enemy forces you to carry a brick for one mile, carry it for two (Mt 5:41).

To love your enemies, the Greek word used is agapáō, and it means to love in a moral sense. It is a kind thing to do. Because God is kind to the unthankful and the evil, his children are expected to do the same. He charges us to defend the poor and to do justice to the afflicted (Ps 82:3-4). The trademark of God’s kindness needs to be reflected in his children. Kindness or gentleness is one of the fruits of the Spirit of God (Ga 5:22).
