Making a contract with someone over a property now has become very technical. With all the terminology and the word usage one could get into a pretty sticky situation, just for signing their name. In fact, nowadays the fine print has become even finer, so we will probably need in the near future a magnifying glass for when signing any contract. Signing a contract now is used metaphorically to committing to something by disseat. Now, God’s people voluntarily signed a contract with death; hell, and this because they loved drunkenness and sensuality. According to statistics about 80,000 people die from alcohol drinking. There has been a significant increase of the people drinking in the US. Men are more likely to engage in risky drinking more then women. In fact, because of problems at home, work or where ever people have signed a contract with death and drank. Now, drinking is not the only thing we commit too when hard times come, there is prostitution, eating, excess working, cheating, fighting, stealing and the list goes on. A contract makes us feel responsible or committed to fulfill.
Isaiah 28:15-16 You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement.
When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood[a] our hiding place.”
16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.
Now, in order for a contract to be voided either one has to fulfill the contract, make a law suit, or someone else will take the place. And, that is where Jesus comes in as the cornerstone Isaiah is referring, that whoever believes should not be ashamed. The contract has to be fully revealed before it can either completely null or some one else can take it over. God’s people gave up hoping and waiting for salvation that they gave themselves up to heavy drinking and sensuality, that they metaphorically signed the contract with death. So, God put in front of them the contract they had made with death with the solution or way out of that contract; Jesus. The Samaritan women had her contract revealed; adulteress, by Jesus when she encounter him by the well (Jh4:14-18). In the song of Moses and Miriam they sang of the salvation of the Lord (ex.15:1-3). Peter in his sermon revealed what Jesus was speaking throughout his ministry and that is that he was that cornerstone which the builders rejected (Acts4:10-12). Jesus saved us from the contract of death that we were bewitched. He is our strength and our salvation (ps.28:8) and therefore we should not fear or feel committed to fulfilling something that makes us feel uncomfortable like a bad contract.
