The five love languages:
One of the things that spices up relationships is affection. Demonstration of one’s love for another person is crucial to the longevity of that relationship. We demonstrate affection to someone else when we hold hands, hug, and kiss. There are five languages that Dr. Gary Chapman speaks about in his book, “The Five Love Languages.” They are, 1. Words of affirmation, 2. Acts of Service, 3. Receiving Gifts, 4. Quality Time, 5. Physical Touch. The last one, “Physical Touch,” is known to be a stress reliever. Oxytocin is released with physical touch. We all have a language of love that resonates most with us. Physical touch involves kissing. Kisses leave messages to the receiver, such as love, like, betrayal, and comfort. The context of the kiss Solomon used is for reconciling God and man. The Psalmist encourages the reader to kiss the Son (Ps. 2:12). Reconciliation involves two parties that were affected by something.
Song of Solomon 1:2-4
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
3 Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
4 Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
The reason why man should be reconciled to God is that he loved us first. God’s move was first in drawing us to himself with the kiss of his lips (Is 57:19). The love of God is a sacrificial one. It is one of patience and mercy. Lamentations tells us that we are not consumed because his mercies are new every morning. The name of the Lord is a stronghold, and it is a secure place for the righteous to run to. Peter told the rulers and the elders of the people in Acts 4:12 that there is no other name by which man can be saved. It is in that name that every knee bows and confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord. When Solomon uses the word virgin he refers to those who seek the Lord with a pure heart. Those whose hearts have been purified love the Lord. Psalms 51:10 David tells God to create in him a clean heart, suggesting that his heart was not cleansed; that he was far from God.
Solomon says, “Draw me,” as if to say that he was far from God. Knowing that there are people who are passionately seeking God, as the virgins caused in Solomon a desire to get close to God. The Psalmist said that people will willingly offer themselves up to God in the day of his power (Ps 110:3). Hosea said that God drew us with bands of love after him (Hos 11:4). Solomon needed God to draw him to him. Jesus said that no one comes to him except the Father draws him (Jh 6:44). He said that if God drew him to him, he was not going to walk, but to run after him. A sense of urgency develops in us when God draws us, causing us to move swiftly. Peter and John, the beloved, felt this after Mary Magelena gave them the news that she could not find the body of Jesus in the tomb. The disciples ran to the tomb with urgency (Jh 20:3-4). There is a call to a people who will run after God with pursuit (Is 55:5).
Psalms 2:12
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
Isaiah 57:19
19 I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him.
Acts 4:12
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Psalms 51:10
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalms 110:3
3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
Hosea 11:4
I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
John 20:3-4
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. 4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
Isaiah 55:5
5 Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the Lord thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.
