Christ revealed:

On the third of Christ, after he went to hell and took the keys of death from Satan and rose with the ancient saints, he began to appear to his disciples (Mt 27:52-53). He appeared to two of his disciples while they were on their way to Emmaus, one by the name of Cleopas. Cleopas was Joseph’s brother, Jesus’ stepfather.  In their dialog, the Lord shares all the scriptures, from Moses to the prophets, that confirms Christ as the Messiah. Those scriptures burnt in their hearts as he shared them. Now the disciples were sad because their master was taken away leaving a void in their hearts. These two were leaving Jerusalem in a sign of giving up hope. Christ appeared to them second to the woman at the tomb. The scriptures tell us that hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured into our hearts (Ro 5:5). As the disciples arrived at the place they were staying, Jesus kept walking and made as if he was going to depart from them, but they insisted that he lodge with them, because it was getting late.

Luke 24:30-32

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Something that Jesus made a practice of with his disciples was the breaking of bread. As the Lord and his two disciples waited for the preparation of the meal, he continued to open the scriptures to them. Among the many scriptures that prophesied the coming fo the Messiah there is Micah that speaks of a ruler coming out of Bethlehem (Mi 5:2). And the prophet Zacariah who speaks of king riding on a donkey (Za 9:9). After the table was set and the dinner was on the table, something miraculous happened, Jesus took the bread and broke it. And once he blessed and gave it to them, their eyes were opened and he disappeared.

Each time the Lord broke bread with his disciples something marvelous occurred as did here.  For example, in the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus took five loaves and two fish, after he blessed them they all ate and were full (Mt 14:19-21). On the third day of the Lord’s resurrection, he manifested to his disciples on the beach and called Peter to feed his sheep (Jn 21:13-15). On the last supper before Christ was crucified, he broke bread with the disciples, revealing the sacred meaning of the event (Mt 26:26-28). Part of the church’s growth and stability is based on the breaking of bread, fellowship and devotion to prayer it partakes in (Acts 2:42).
