Matthew 18:18-20<\/strong><\/p>\n

Big Idea:<\/strong> When the church agrees together in prayer, heaven responds \u2014 because Christ Himself stands in the midst of those who gather in His name.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/h2>\n

Church, listen. I want you to hear me this morning. There is something powerful that happens when believers come together \u2014 not just to sing, not just to sit, but to agree<\/em>. To open their mouths in one direction, with one voice, lifting one prayer to the throne of God.<\/p>\n

You know, sometimes we come to church, and we treat it like a routine. We come in, we sit down, we sing a song, we hear the word, we go home. But there is something happening in the spirit when two or three gather in His name. Something that heaven itself pays attention to. Something that makes hell tremble.<\/p>\n

Jesus said something in Matthew chapter 18 that I want us to look at very carefully this morning. He said:<\/p>\n

“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” \u2014 Matthew 18:18-20<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“De cierto os digo que todo lo que at\u00e9is en la tierra, ser\u00e1 atado en el cielo; y todo lo que desat\u00e9is en la tierra, ser\u00e1 desatado en el cielo. Tambi\u00e9n os digo que si dos de vosotros se pusieren de acuerdo en la tierra acerca de cualquiera cosa que pidieren, les ser\u00e1 hecho por mi Padre que est\u00e1 en los cielos. Oh, when I read that, something estremece inside of me. Because Jesus is not talking about a suggestion. He’s talking about authority<\/em>. He’s talking about dominion. He’s talking about something that was lost in the Garden and restored at the cross. And He’s giving it back to the church.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

1. Authority Restored: What Was Lost Has Been Given Back<\/h2>\n

You have to understand where this authority comes from. Go back to the beginning. Go back to Genesis chapter 1, verse 26. When God was creating \u2014 when the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the God team, were designing humanity \u2014 He said something:<\/p>\n

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” \u2014 Genesis 1:26<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Entonces dijo Dios: Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen, conforme a nuestra semejanza; y se\u00f1oree en los peces del mar, en las aves de los cielos, en las bestias, en toda la tierra, y en todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra.”<\/em> \u2014 G\u00e9nesis 1:26<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dominion. That word, hermano, hermana \u2014 dominion<\/em>. God gave man authority over everything. Every fish, every bird, every creature, the whole earth. Before the fall, before sin ever entered the picture, God’s plan was for His image-bearers to walk in authority.<\/p>\n

But you know what happened. You know the story. Adam and Eve \u2014 they had it all. They walked with God. They had dominion. They had authority. And they voluntarily gave it away. They handed it to the deceiver, the serpent, Satan. And from that moment, everything the enemy has done \u2014 every scheme, every trap, every chain, every bondage \u2014 has been about keeping humanity under his subjection. Keeping you in slavery.<\/p>\n

The Apostle Paul tells us:<\/p>\n

“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” \u2014 Romans 6:16<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“\u00bfNo sab\u00e9is que si os present\u00e1is a alguien como siervos para obedecerle, siervos sois de aquel a quien obedec\u00e9is, sea del pecado para muerte, o de la obediencia para justicia?”<\/em> \u2014 Romanos 6:16<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Whomever you submit to, that is whose slave you become. If you submit to sin, sin becomes your master. If you submit to the flesh, the flesh becomes your master. But if you submit to Christ \u2014 oh, if you submit to Christ \u2014 righteousness becomes your portion.<\/p>\n

But here is the good news. Here is where I need you to lean in. Jesus didn’t leave us without authority. He didn’t leave us as orphans. He didn’t leave us helpless against the enemy. He said:<\/p>\n

“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” \u2014 Luke 10:19<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“He aqu\u00ed os doy potestad de hollar sobre serpientes y escorpiones, y sobre toda fuerza del enemigo, y nada os da\u00f1ar\u00e1.”<\/em> \u2014 Lucas 10:19<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Did you hear that? He gave it. He gave you authority. Not just over temptation. Not just over bad habits. Over all<\/em> the power of the enemy. The same dominion that was lost in the Garden \u2014 Jesus restored it at the cross. What was broken, He mended. What was stolen, He reclaimed. And He handed it back to His church.<\/p>\n

So when He says in Matthew 18:18, “Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” \u2014 He’s not exaggerating. He’s not speaking in metaphors. He’s telling you that the authority of heaven backs up what the church declares on earth.<\/p>\n

The word “bind” in the Greek is de\u014d<\/em> (G1210) \u2014 it means to declare something prohibited, to declare something guilty. And “loose” is ly\u014d<\/em> (G3089) \u2014 it means to declare something forgiven, to declare something allowed. Church, listen \u2014 we have the authority to keep someone guilty or to set them free. We have the authority to lock something down or to open something up. That is the power Christ has placed in the hands of His people.<\/p>\n

2. The Power of Agreement: When Two Become One Voice<\/h2>\n

Now, Jesus takes it further. He doesn’t just say, “You have authority.” He says, “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.”<\/p>\n

“Again I say unto you” \u2014 He’s emphasizing this. He’s saying, “I need you to get this. I need this to sink deep into your heart.” If two<\/em> of you agree. If two of you come into alignment. If two of you put your faith together and cry out to God with one voice \u2014 heaven moves.<\/p>\n

Think about that. Think about what happens when the church aligns together in prayer. It creates one sound \u2014 like a symphony. You know, in a symphony, every instrument has a different part. The violin plays one thing, the trumpet plays another, the drums keep a different rhythm. But when they come together under one conductor, under one direction, the sound is magnificent. It moves people. It stirs something deep.<\/p>\n

That’s what happens when the church prays together. We may have different burdens. We may have different needs. We may be carrying different struggles. But when we come under one name \u2014 the name of Jesus \u2014 and we agree, “Lord, we are asking You for this” \u2014 oh, heaven responds.<\/p>\n

Solomon understood this:<\/p>\n

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” \u2014 Ecclesiastes 4:9-10<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Mejores son dos que uno; porque tienen mejor paga de su trabajo. Porque si cayeren, el uno levantar\u00e1 a su compa\u00f1ero; pero \u00a1ay del solo! que cuando cayere, no habr\u00e1 segundo que lo levante.”<\/em> \u2014 Eclesiast\u00e9s 4:9-10<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Two are better than one. Not because God can’t hear one person praying. Of course He can. But there is an amplification that happens in agreement. There is a multiplication of faith. There is a strengthening that comes when you are not alone.<\/p>\n

You know, I’ve seen it. I’ve seen what happens when a brother is going through it \u2014 when the weight is heavy, when the valley is dark, when he feels like he can’t take another step. And then a sister in Christ comes alongside him and says, “Let me pray with you.” And they pray together. And something breaks. Something shifts. The atmosphere changes. That’s the power of two.<\/p>\n

And Jesus may have been connecting this to the legal principle in the Law:<\/p>\n

“One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.” \u2014 Deuteronomy 19:15<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“No se levantar\u00e1 un solo testigo contra hombre alguno para acusarle de rebeli\u00f3n, de pecado o de maldad alguna que cometa; por la boca de dos o de tres testigos ser\u00e1 establecida la causa.”<\/em> \u2014 Deuteronomio 19:15<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the courts of heaven, agreement is testimony. When two or three believers come together in prayer, it’s like presenting a case before the throne of God. And the Judge of all the earth hears it. And He responds.<\/p>\n

3. He Is in the Midst: The Promise That Changes Everything<\/h2>\n

And then Jesus says the most beautiful thing. The thing that ties it all together. He says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”<\/p>\n

He doesn’t say, “I might show up.” He doesn’t say, “I’ll think about it.” He says, “I am<\/em> there.” Present tense. Definite. Certain. When you gather in His name \u2014 when you come together with other believers, not for gossip, not for drama, not for religion, but for Him<\/em> \u2014 He is there.<\/p>\n

In the midst. Right in the center. Not on the outskirts. Not watching from a distance. Right there, in the middle of His people, with His authority backing their prayers, with His power confirming their agreement.<\/p>\n

Church, this is why the enemy fights unity so hard. This is why the devil works overtime to bring division, offense, misunderstanding, and isolation. Because he knows \u2014 he knows<\/em> \u2014 that when the church comes together in agreement, when two or three gather in the name of Jesus, heaven opens. And his kingdom shakes.<\/p>\n

That’s why Matthew 18 doesn’t start with verse 18. If you go back to the beginning of the chapter, Jesus is talking about humility. He’s talking about receiving one another like little children. He’s talking about not causing others to stumble. He’s talking about going to your brother when there’s a problem \u2014 not talking about them, not holding grudges, but restoring the relationship. Because the authority to bind and loose is connected to relationship<\/em>. It’s connected to unity. It’s connected to love.<\/p>\n

You can’t exercise kingdom authority while walking in unforgiveness. You can’t bind the enemy while holding your brother in bondage to your bitterness. The power flows through love. The power flows through agreement. The power flows through humility.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

So here is what I want to leave you with this morning.<\/p>\n

You have authority. Not because of who you are, but because of whose you are. You are made in the image of God. You are redeemed by the blood of Christ. You are filled with the Holy Spirit. And Jesus has given you the power to bind and to loose \u2014 to declare what heaven will back up.<\/p>\n

But that authority is amplified when it’s exercised together. So don’t walk alone. Don’t pray alone when you don’t have to. Find a brother. Find a sister. Come into agreement. Lift your voice together. And watch what God does.<\/p>\n

Because He promised \u2014 He promised<\/em> \u2014 that where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there in the midst.<\/p>\n

And when He is in the midst, everything changes.<\/p>\n

The chains break. The sickness bows. The depression lifts. The prodigal comes home. The marriage is restored. The door opens. The miracle manifests.<\/p>\n

We believe that what we bind on earth is bound in heaven. And we believe that what we loose on earth is loosed in heaven.<\/p>\n

So, church \u2014 come into agreement. Come together. Don’t let the enemy divide you. Don’t let isolation steal your authority. Two are better than one. And when we agree, heaven moves.<\/p>\n
