There is something that shifts in your spirit when you understand — really understand — that the God of heaven and earth, the One who spoke the stars into existence, the One who parted the Red Sea, the One who raised Jesus from the dead — that God — chose to make His home inside of you.

Not beside you. Not watching from a distance. In you.

And that is the word that John gives us in 1 John chapter 4, verse 4. Listen to this:

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

“Hijitos, vosotros sois de Dios, y los habéis vencido; porque mayor es el que está en vosotros, que el que está en el mundo.”

Greater is He that is in you. God Always Desired to Be With His People

Before we can understand what it means that God is in us, we need to understand where He started. Because God didn’t begin by dwelling inside of man. He began by walking with man.

In the Garden of Eden, God walked with Adam and Eve. He was with them. He spoke to them. He fellowshipped with them. And then sin came, and that closeness — that face-to-face fellowship — was broken.

But God’s desire never changed.

Go back to Genesis 28:15, when God speaks to Jacob in a dream. Jacob is running. He’s alone. He’s afraid. He’s sleeping on a stone in the middle of nowhere. And God appears to him and says:

“Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.”

“He aquí, yo estoy contigo, y te guardaré por dondequiera que fueres, y volveré a traerte a esta tierra; porque no te dejaré hasta que haya hecho lo que te he dicho.”

God assured His people that His presence was going to be with them. “I am with you.” “Yo estoy contigo.” And He was not going to leave until He fulfilled His plan and purpose in them.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see this pattern — God with His people. He was with Abraham. He was with Moses in the wilderness. He was with David in the caves. He was with the prophets. His presence — the Shekinah glory — filled the tabernacle, filled the temple. God was showing His people, “I am here. I am near. I have not abandoned you.”

But there was something more coming. Something greater.

2. The Spirit Came Upon — But Now He Lives In

In the Old Testament, we see moments — specific moments — where the Spirit of God came upon someone for a particular task. It was temporary. It was powerful, but it was for a season.

Look at 1 Samuel 11:6. The children of Israel are in trouble. Nahash the Ammonite has threatened them — he says, “Surrender, or I’m going to gouge out every one of your right eyes.” That’s the threat. Humiliation or destruction.

And Saul — Saul, who had just been anointed king — hears these words, and something happens:

“And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.”

“Al oír Saúl estas palabras, el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con poder; y él se encendió en ira en gran manera.”

The Spirit of God came upon Saul. Vino sobre él con poder. He came upon him with power. And Saul rose up and delivered Israel that day.

But notice — the Spirit came upon. He came on Saul. This was the pattern in the Old Testament. The Spirit would come upon a judge, upon a prophet, upon a king — for a specific purpose, for a specific moment. And then there would be seasons where the Spirit would lift.

The people of God lived in a time where the Spirit was with them and sometimes upon them — but not yet in them.

But Jesus — Jesus changed everything.

3. Jesus Promised: He Will Be In You

In John chapter 14, Jesus is preparing His disciples for what is about to happen. He’s about to go to the cross. He’s about to be taken from them. And He knows they’re going to feel alone. He knows they’re going to feel lost.

So He gives them a promise. And not just any promise — a promise that had never been given before in all of human history.

John 14:17:

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

“El Espíritu de verdad, al cual el mundo no puede recibir, porque no le ve, ni le conoce; pero vosotros le conocéis, porque mora con vosotros, y estará en vosotros.”

Did you catch that? Jesus says, “He dwelleth with you” — that’s the Old Testament reality, God with His people — “and shall be in you” — that’s the new covenant reality. That’s the promise. That’s the shift.

God no longer just walks beside you. He takes up residence inside of you.

We’re going to let this sink in. Because the idea that God is in us — not just watching over us, not just guiding us from a distance, but living inside of us — that changes everything.

It means you are never alone. It means you are never without power. It means you are never without guidance. Because the Spirit of truth — the Spirit of the living God — has made His home in your heart.

And because of that, Romans 8:37 can say what it says:

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”

“Antes, en todas estas cosas somos más que vencedores por medio de aquel que nos amó.”

More than conquerors. Más que vencedores. Not because of your strength. Not because of your ability. Not because of your education or your talent or your connections. But because of Him — the One who loved you, the One who lives in you, the One who is greater than anything the world can throw at you.

Christ is all in all. And He is in you.

4. How Do We Know It’s His Voice?

Now, here’s where it gets practical. Because if God’s Spirit lives in us, then He speaks to us. He guides us. He directs us. But we live in a world full of voices. There are voices of fear. Voices of doubt. Voices of accusation. Voices that sound spiritual but are not of God.

So how do we know? How do we know when it’s the Spirit of God speaking to us and when it’s not?

John gives us the test. Look at 1 John 4:2-3:

“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”

“En esto conoced el Espíritu de Dios: Todo espíritu que confiesa que Jesucristo ha venido en carne, es de Dios; y todo espíritu que no confiesa que Jesucristo ha venido en carne, no es de Dios; y este es el espíritu del anticristo, el cual vosotros habéis oído que viene, y que ahora ya está en el mundo.”

The test is this: Does the voice point you to Christ? Does it confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh? Does it remind you that Jesus overcame as a man — that He walked this earth, that He faced temptation, that He suffered, that He died, and that He rose again victorious?

When the Spirit of truth speaks, He always points to Christ. He always reminds you of what Jesus has done. He always leads you toward victory, not toward defeat.

But when a voice comes and there is no mention of Christ — when it speaks fear without pointing to the One who conquered fear, when it speaks condemnation without pointing to the blood that cleanses, when it speaks defeat without pointing to the empty tomb — that is not the Spirit of God. That is the spirit of the antichrist. That is the voice of the enemy.

You know the Spirit of truth when He confesses to you that you are victorious and can overcome, because Christ did it when He came and walked among men. Jesus came as a man and overcame the devil and all the powers of darkness at the cross.

And when John says, “greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world,” he is speaking of the Spirit of God — which Jesus says is His Spirit. Galatians 4:6 confirms it:

“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”

“Y por cuanto sois hijos, Dios envió a vuestros corazones el Espíritu de su Hijo, el cual clama: ¡Abba, Padre!”

The Spirit that lives in you is the Spirit of Christ Himself. The same Jesus who calmed the storm, who healed the sick, who cast out demons, who defeated death — His Spirit is in you.

Application

So what does this mean for you today? What does this mean for the week ahead?

First, stop living like you’re alone. You are not alone. The Greater One lives inside of you. When you face that trial, when you face that diagnosis, when you face that financial pressure, when you face that broken relationship — you are not facing it by yourself. He is in you.

Second, learn to test the voices. Not every thought that comes to your mind is from God. Test it. Does it point to Christ? Does it lead you toward truth? Does it confess that Jesus has come in the flesh and overcome? Then it is of God. Does it lead you toward fear, toward condemnation, toward hopelessness without any mention of Christ? Then reject it. That is not your voice. That is not God’s voice.

Third, walk in the power of His presence. You have the Spirit of the living God inside of you. That means you have access to power, to wisdom, to guidance, to comfort, to strength that the world cannot understand. Don’t live beneath your inheritance. Don’t live as if you’re powerless. You are of God. You have overcome. Because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.

Conclusion

From the beginning, God desired to be with His people. He told Jacob, “I am with you.” He poured His Spirit upon Saul. He walked with His people through every season.

But through Jesus Christ, God did something even greater. He didn’t just come with you — He came in you. The Spirit of His Son now lives in your heart, crying out, “Abba, Father.”

And because He is in you, you are more than a conqueror. You are of God.
