There are a variety of elements that describe a spirit, for example, evil, good, broken, contrite, helpless, weak, charming, deceiving, tired, destructive, and the list goes on. The spirit of a man is God breathed, so it will go back to him when the time comes (Ecc 12:7). It is known to be what animates man, his spirit. It is also known as the soul. The sin in the great fall of man affected his spirit and ours. Many factors define our spirit, whether our spirit is good or bad. Life itself helps shape our spirit if we allow it (Prov 15:13). Our character and mannerisms reveal what type of spirit we have, and depending on what those are, he/she will either find favor with God or not. The scriptures tell us that a person with a humble spirit will find favor with God (1 Pet 3:4). The Bible says that God does not turn away someone who comes to him with a contrite spirit (Ps 51:17).

Luke 9:53-56

53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. The disciples had seen Jesus cast out a demon, feed five thousand, and be transfigured before their eyes. When the disciples saw the rejection, they became angry. The character of their spirits changed from joy and excitement to anger. They had lost the identity of the type of spirit God was forming in them. God’s spirit is of life (Jh 6:63). The scriptures teach us that we have been freed from the law of sin and death through the law of the Spirit (Ro 8:2). Jesus was teaching them to have a lowly spirit (Mt 11:29-30), but in that moment of rejection, they lost it.

The things that hurt or bother us the most can cause us to lose the identity of the type of spirit we have. The spirit that has been given to us is not a double-minded one, but one of power (2 Tim 1:7). Allowing ourselves to be moved from what God wants with us is not healthy for our spirit. Our spirit has to identify itself with Christ.

<div class="row" style="padding-top: 10px;
