With the pandemic lasting as long as it has, we found ourselves getting deeper in debt as a past time. Online shopping rose drastically during these times causing people to get deeper in debt. God told his people that if anyone needed a loan that they should loan, but they should not borrow (Deut15:6, Mt5:42). Because when one borrows he becomes a slave to that lender (pro22:7), but unfortunately as our society advances we find our selves forced to borrow if we want to survive. We can live debt free up to a certain point. With so many thieves nowadays it has become almost impossible to lend to others (ps37:21). Now, almost every debt is required to be paid in full. The US government is trying to wipe away some students loans, but that is still in the process. There are different types of debts such as financial, word and sin. The first two are within men, but the later is with God.

Luke 7:48-50

Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

The feeling that we have to pay someone because of a debt burns our conscience. This women who brought the Alabaster box and anointed Jesus with her tears, felt the need to pay her debt the only way she knew. Simeon the Pharisee invited Jesus to his home for a dinner, now he was probably looking for an opportunity to entrap him as a form of entertainment. But, Jesus’ acceptance attendance to the event, leads us to understand that Christ has no distinction of persons (Acts10:34). Each one of us have become in debt with God when we sin, for we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (Ro3:23). We chose to become in debt and therefore we become slaves to that (Ro6:16-18). The more we recognize our sinfulness and show fruit of repentance the more we are forgiven our debt. Jesus told Simeon the parable of the two debtors and the forgiveness by the lender not so much making emphasis on the amount of debt but on the attitude that follows being forgiven (Lk7:47). God is the only one that can forgive us our sins, and so since Jesus had this authority within himself the people were astonished at his saying; “Your sins are forgiven.” So, repentance leads unto salvation and this woman experienced this saving moment.

Verses

Deuteronomy 15:6

6 For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.
